Exercise title: Looking Closely at a Champion

Exercise length: 20 minutes

Target age group: 9-10 Years

What You’ll Need:

  • The Indonesian stamp image
  • Paper and coloring materials
  • 20 minutes

Step 1: First Impressions (5 minutes)

Look at the stamp for 30 seconds without talking.

Then discuss with a partner:

  • How does this image make you feel?
  • What’s the first thing you noticed?
  • What do you think is happening in the picture?

Step 2: Detective Work (5 minutes)

Now look more carefully at the details:

  • What is the person doing?
  • What are they wearing?
  • What equipment can you see?
  • What colors has the artist chosen?
  • Why do you think this picture was put on a stamp?

Hint: The words say “Pendidikan Luar Biasa” which means “Special Education” in Indonesian. This stamp celebrates Paralympic athletes.

Step 3: Thinking Bigger (5-10 minutes)

Discuss these questions as a class:

  • Why do you think Indonesia made a stamp about Paralympic sports?
  • What does this stamp tell us about what Indonesia values?
  • Have you seen disabled athletes in pictures or on TV before? Where?
  • Why might it be important to show athletes with disabilities?
  • How is this athlete shown? (Strong? Fast? Determined? Something else?)

Extension Activity (20-30 minutes)

Design your own stamp that celebrates someone or something you think is important. Think about:

  • What will you show?
  • What colors will you use?
  • What feeling do you want people to have when they see it?
